An important concept worthy of discussion in today’s environment is that of growth stocks and value stocks.

Growth Stocks: Are expected to outperform the overall market over time because of their future potential to gain an edge over their competitors and increase their market capitalization.

Value Stocks:  May trade below intrinsic value (what they may be worth) and will theoretically be trading at a discount which can further provide a superior return.

Throughout the history of the stock market, there have been long periods where one category has led the other (see chart below).  During the most recent expansion, growth has outperformed value however a recent reversal in momentum has occurred. If this trend continues over the next several years, the benefit of our actively managed strategies that focus on value investing should be showcased.
